What a handyman really costs in Florida

Written by Jon Breeden, who has quoted this work for twenty years. The short version: the hourly number you found online is the least useful fact in the decision, and Florida law matters more than price.

Why the hourly rate misleads

Search results quote Florida handyman rates from about $50 to $125 an hour, and the number is technically true and practically useless. An hourly rate tells you nothing about speed, and a slow cheap hour costs more than a fast fair one. Twenty years in, Jon quotes most work by the job: you know the total before he starts, and slow days are his problem, not yours.

What actually moves the price

The Florida line a handyman cannot cross

Florida does not license handymen, but it strictly licenses trades. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing and structural work belong to licensed contractors, at any price. A handyman who says yes to a panel swap is not saving you money, he is costing you your insurance coverage. Jon names the line on every quote and refers the licensed-trade parts to the right people.

How to read a quote

A fair one names the full scope, includes haul-away and cleanup, and holds unless the scope changes. The reviews on his profile mention cleanup unprompted — "cleaned up like never here" — because that is part of the job, not an extra.

“Excellent work, cleaned up like never here. My best experience with a contractor in Fort White in 17 years.”

The questions everyone asks

How much should a handyman charge per hour in Florida?
Roughly $50–$125 depending on area and skill. Jon quotes the job, not the hour, so the total is known before work starts.
What is a fair price to pay a handyman?
One that names the whole job in writing and includes cleanup. Walk away from big cash deposits and swinging prices.
What is the maximum a handyman can charge in Florida?
No cap on price, a hard cap on scope: licensed-trade work must go to licensed contractors.
What is the most requested handyman service?
Drywall repair, then the small-jobs bundle. Around here, add fence repair and mobile home work.
